Unit Description

Students will learn about different blood types, their functions, and how to blood type.

Lesson Description for Day

Students will use their knowledge from what they had learned already in the unit to determine the blood type of 3 different bloods. This blood typing kit is well-used in schools and is a hands-on approach to learning.

State Standard

Standard 3:

The student will develop an understanding of the cell, molecular basis of heredity, biological evolution, interdependence of organisms, matter, energy, and organization in living systems, and the behavior of organisms.

Goals

-understand antigens and anti bodies, white blood cells, red blood cells, and other immunity cells

-be able to apply their knowledge of cells to determine blood type

-determine how blood transfusion works in hospitals

-understand the importance of immunity in the body

Lesson Goals

-determine blood type by applying their knowledge they have already learned

-students will use a kit to determine three different blood types provided

-give optional guided notes to help them understand why the blood clotted or didn't

Anticipatory Set

-have a lab set up in the front of the room with the blood, the blood typing cards, and the antigens

-have directions presented on the board that tell them to get goggles and gloves

Introduce and Model New Knowledge

-students will be able to have their guided notes out

-short lesson at the beginning to review antigens and antibodies and how they affect blood.

-at the end of class, student will individually watch a short video that explains how blood type in important, especially in blood transfusion

Provide Guided Practice

-blood typing kit

-guided notes

-video on blood transfusion

-students will fill out a lab report on canvas at for the next class period

Provide Independent Practice

- if students don't finish their lab in time, they have to watch the video at home, and it will be posted on canvas.

- Finish lab report on canvas

Wrap-up

If they haven't already, in the last 20 minutes of class, the class will talk to their table partner about what blood type they believe their blood to be. I will walk around the room and double check what they believe their blood type to be. Then, students need to clean up and dispose of the blood and gloves properly.

formative assessment

That day, their formative will be me going around and them telling me about their blood type and why they think that. They necessarily need to be right when they do their lab right up, but they need to back themselves up with why they think that.

Summative assessment

Students will choose a partner to work with, and they will be assigned a different cell to research. They will make a model of the cell and research the importance of the cell. They will present it to the class.
